What is the Best IOL for Me?

Iol,Intraocular,Lens,Cataract,Eye,Ophthalmology

Replacing your cloudy vision with the sharp vision of your youth might sound like it’s just a dream — but cataract surgery makes it possible. Choosing an intraocular lens (IOL) for your cataract surgery is almost like getting a brand-new set of eyes.

During cataract surgery, Dr. Johnson uses his high-level laser expertise to precisely remove your cloudy eye lens. He positions your new IOL based on extensive imaging information and presurgical planning.

IOLs can correct any refractive error, including:

  • Myopia: nearsightedness
  • Hyperopia: farsightedness
  • Astigmatism: eye lens or cornea elongation that causes blurry vision
  • Presbyopia: close-up focus loss with age

Dr. Johnson and our dedicated team provide personalized guidance to help you choose the IOL that serves your unique needs and preferences the best. Today’s blog explores IOL types so you can consider what’s ideal for you.

Monofocal IOLs

Monofocal IOLs correct vision at one distance. For example, if you have myopia, your monofocal IOL can allow you to see well at a distance.

But it’s common to have a couple of refractive errors. For example, many people with myopia or hyperopia also have astigmatism. Additionally, all adults develop presbyopia, usually after age 45. That’s why you still need reading glasses if you choose a monofocal IOL.

Multifocal IOLs

Multifocal IOLs correct your vision at multiple distances. They essentially solve the problem we just discussed with monofocal lenses, reducing your need for glasses or allowing you to live glasses-free.

Multifocal IOLs have “zones” inside the lens. Each zone covers a visual distance (near, intermediate, and far). As you adapt to the lens, a process called neuroadaption, your brain automatically learns where to look within the IOL.

Toric IOLs

About 13% of all refractive errors are astigmatism, a problem that toric IOLs correct. This type of IOL reshapes your corneal curvature and gives you clearer eyesight at every distance.

Extended Depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOLs

EDOF IOLs can provide sharp vision for most intermediate and distance vision tasks. This includes routine daily activities, from viewing your computer screen to driving a car. EDOF IOLS can minimize eye problems like glare and halos around lights. You usually still need to wear reading glasses.
