So, you scheduled your cataract surgery, and you’re wondering what’s next. At Johnson Laser Eye, our team, led by renowned cataract surgeon Dr. Gregory Johnson, believes that our patients deserve the best care as they travel the path to clear vision.

That starts with detailed preparation guidelines. When you know what to expect and how to prepare, you can have the smoothest surgery and easiest recovery. Today’s blog covers essential info about cataract surgery and how you can prepare.

Understanding Why You Need Cataract Surgery

Cataracts cause eye lens clouding that makes it difficult to see clearly. Severe cataracts may rob you of your ability to drive, read, view your phone, recognize your loved ones, or enjoy your favorite hobbies.

Cataracts often grow slowly, usually over decades. You might be able to manage with eyeglasses, bright lights, and other measures in the beginning. But, when it gets to the point that your quality of life suffers, Dr. Johnson may suggest surgery.

Surgery Planning

Your pre-surgery checkup includes an eye evaluation with the latest state-of-the-art testing system. The painless tests gather many eye measurements to create a complete map for surgery planning.

Dr. Johnson takes the time to discuss the surgery with you and helps you choose the best type of intraocular lens (your new artificial eye lens) for you.

You also spend some time with our patient concierge to:

  • Choose the ideal day and time for surgery
  • Learn about insurance filing
  • Plan financing if needed
  • Get pre-surgery instructions

When you leave our office, you’ll be ready to move on to the next step: Surgery prep.

Pre-surgery Prep

We provide detailed pre-surgery instructions. Information includes details about topics such as fasting before surgery, adjusting medication, and arranging transportation home.

Surgery Day

Dr. Johnson is a trailblazer, being the first surgeon in Southeastern North Carolina to use the LENSAR ALLY Adaptive Laser Cataract Treatment System. This system, the most advanced that exists, allows for a highly accurate and customized procedure.

Ultimately, using this specialized approach improves both surgery safety and patient outcomes. Recovery may also be faster because it’s a less invasive approach than traditional cataract surgery.

Post-Surgery Care

After the surgery, we provide protective eyewear and recovery instructions. Follow these directions closely to have a smooth recovery. For example, use eye drops on schedule and avoid strenuous activity at first.

Some blurry vision and mild discomfort are normal, and usually short-lived. Dr. Johnson schedules follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure a smooth recovery.
